About me
I’m an experienced Geography teacher with over 20 years’ teaching experience, currently working in a sixth-form college where 35% of my current A-level class are achieving A*–A grades on the WJEC / Eduqas specification.
I hold a BSc in Geography with Oceanography and a PGCE in Secondary Geography from UCL Institute of Education, one of the UK’s leading institutions for teacher training. During my career I have taught in state, grammar and independent schools, giving me experience of working with students from a wide range of backgrounds, abilities and learning needs.
Alongside teaching, I work as a GCSE and A-level Geography examiner and moderator (WJEC / Eduqas). This gives me a detailed understanding of how exam questions are assessed and, importantly, what examiners are actually looking for in high-mark answers. I help students turn their geographical knowledge into well-structured, precise answers that address the question and maximise the marks available.
My tutoring is supportive, structured and tailored to each student. I begin by identifying their strengths and areas for development, before building a focused programme around their individual needs. This might involve filling knowledge gaps, improving case-study application, developing essay technique, understanding command words or simply building confidence.
I particularly enjoy working with students who know they are capable of achieving more but need the right guidance to get there. My aim is not simply to help students learn more Geography, but to help them understand the subject, become confident in their ability and develop the skills to achieve the grades they are capable of.
Outside of tutoring, I'm a father of three, which keeps life busy, lively and rarely dull. Being a parent has given me a real appreciation of how differently young people learn, and how much patience, encouragement and the right kind of challenge can make. It has also made me a better listener and a more adaptable teacher, and I bring that understanding to every session.
When I'm not working or juggling family life, you'll usually find me on a mountain bike, exploring trails and hills whenever I can. Geography is never far away, as time spent riding through varied landscapes is a constant reminder of how the physical world is shaped by geology, weather and human activity. I'm also passionate about travel, and have always been drawn to experiencing different places, cultures and environments first-hand.
