Case Studies
From working at Grade D to achieving a Grade B at A-Level and securing his first choice university to study Geography.

What were the barriers?
Geography case studies often involve dense text, maps, data, and complex terminology. Tom found it was taking longer to read and understand these materials, which was hindering efficient study. Additionally, Tom was finding it tough to hold onto multiple pieces of information at once. This is especially difficult when recalling key case study facts (e.g. dates, statistics, names of places or processes).
What was the strategy?
To improve Tom’s outcomes, we worked across several areas.
1. Diagnostic Assessment & Goal Setting
We initially put Tom through a comprehensive evaluation to identify his current understanding, specific challenges related to dyslexia, and how he responded to certain tasks. We established clear, measurable objectives, around improving case study recall and enhancing responses to exam questions. This helped guide the tutoring process.
2. Consistent Case Study Framework
We pushed a uniform template for analysing case studies, ensuring consistency and ease of recall:
• Location & Context: Geographical setting and background.
• Key Facts: Essential statistics and data points.
• Processes & Impacts: Human and physical geographical processes involved.
• Responses & Management: Strategies implemented and their effectiveness.
• Evaluation: Critical assessment of outcomes and implications.
3. Integrating Technology
We used assistive technologies to support learning:
• Nearpod: An interactive tutoring interface to keep session pace high and engagement higher.
• Digital Flashcards: Quizlet for interactive revision.
4. Exam Technique
We focused on developing exam skills tailored to Tom’s needs:
• Question Deconstruction: We taught the BUG method to break down and interpret exam questions effectively.
• Answer Planning: Practice organising responses using structured outlines before writing. Use of a 20 mark question grid in particular.
• Timed Practice: We stimulated exam conditions to build confidence and time management skills.
What were the results?
With a combination of the strategies and consistently high standards, Tom broke through his barriers and went from working at a D in his Christmas Mock exams to a B in his final Summer exams. Tom went on to secure Geography at his university of choice,
